The pen like device has a set of 3 detachable heads all with different purposes.

After removing any old polish you use the  blue filing head to get rid of any snags and splits and help shape your nails into the desired shape.

Once you have achieved your desired shape you then use the buffing head to get rid of any ridges, discoloured or damaged  parts of the surface of the nail. This step leaves your nails smooth and perfectly primed for painting if you so wish. If you decide to paint them  going be sure to apply a base coat before applying colour.
