How to have great hair (in-between salon visits)

Imagine a world where you had the time and money to be able to pop into see your hairdresser at the first sign of regrowth, dullness or fading. Most of us need to make the time to get these issues dealt with, and Im sure Im not the only who has put off these appointments due to lack of time or money.

There are a few simple steps however, that can help your hair looking better for longer and can help you survive a few weeks more without the major drama that is bad hair!! The great thing is that all the products listed below are not only effective but are easy on the old credit card as they’re all available at your local supermarket, chemist or Priceline store.

  1. Refresh your colour

sheer blonde
There are a wide range of  colour refreshing shampoos on the market. In my opinion some of the best are John Freida colour boosting shampoo and conditioner ranges ($15.99). Available in varieties suitable for blondes, brunettes and redheads systems the in shower products help to refresh your colour, making your blonde or darker hair brighter.

brunette

For even quicker results the John Frieda Brilliant Brunette range also includes treatments to help deepen or brighten  your colour with even more noticeable results. The John Frieda In shower lightening treatment ($17.99) contains  two formulas that mix and activate as you pump it out of the single use tube to give you up to one shade lighter locks. The Brilliant Brunette Colour Deepening Treatment ($17.99) on the other hand contains a small amount of dye in the formula that will give your dark hair a deeper more lustrous look.

2. Treat Yo’Self

hask treatment

There are a myriad of hair treatments, some as simple as coconut oil based treatments such as the Hask Monoi Coconut Oil Treatment ($4.99), which leaves your hair ultra shiny and leaves you smelling like a Tahitian princes..

elvive oil
One treatment I have been enjoying of late is the newly released   L’oreal Elvive Extraordinary Oil – OI in Cream Treatment ($9.99) The oil infused lotion smells amazing but also smoothens the skin with precious flower oils. This is one that has been helping my recently blondified hair!

3. Hide those roots

Put down your headbands, you can now quickly and easily temporarily cover greys or any type of regrowth with two new products.

hide root spray

For those with more dramatic regrowth to hide the L’Oreal Magic Retouch ($15.99) is Perfect. It has a fine tipped nozzle to get right down to the roots and gives a natural looking finihs that will wash out during your next shower. The spray format allows for a quick and easy application.

hide root powder palette

for smaller areas. particularly around the face there is John Freida’s Root Concealer ($19.99). This is perfect to take with you on the go as the small black compact contains a large mirror and a brush to apply the powder product directly to the hair. Also useful is the fact that each compact contains two shades so that you can mix your own custom shade.

4. Tone it down

purple toneNothing refreshes the look of a hair colour more than a toner. For me personally, my naturally dark and chemically lightened hair causes issues quickly after a salon visit due to brassiness. I manage the situation by using the Schwarzkopf Extra Care Blonde Toner. At $7.99 its the cheapest “purple treatment” Ive seen but also the most effective for me. Using more than oce a weak will turn the blondest parts of my hair grey to purple.

5. Keep Cool

elvive heat

Constant stress via heat styling and blow drying can really accelerate the signs of damage of your hair. Using a heat protectant spray or cream such as the Elvive Smooth Intense Heat protectant Spray ($9.99) is perfect to use on wet or dry hair and will prtect your hair from damage due to temperatures up to 230 degrees celcius. In addition to that the formula helps to reduce frizziness caused by humidity for up to 72 hours helping your blow dry look better for longer.

Dont we all! Mine is suffering at the moment after my overseas holiday due to the drying flight and hard water in Europe. I need to practise what I preach for a while to get it back to good condition. Thanks for commenting!
